Why Did I Become A Coach?

Despite being a bright, disciplined, health-conscious person who was always striving for self-improvement, I still got sucked into our alcohol-soaked culture and went from being a social drinker to someone who drank at least a bottle of wine of night, preferably at home and alone. When I realized I was drinking too much, I started a 5 year painful cycle of trying to moderate, all the while swimming into deeper shame, guilt and hopelessness. After finding my freedom thanks to the book This Naked Mind and the 30 day Alcohol Experiment, I knew I wanted to share this with others and help them find the same freedom.

I believe that

  • being “functional” isn’t enough and that we are each called to be the best versions of our unique selves
  • alcohol is an addictive drug but we’ve been conditioned by society to believe it’s ok, harmless and maybe even beneficial
  • altering memories is not worth it (life is too short and you end up numbing the good as well as the not-so-good)
  • AA is not for everyone
  • you are not defective or powerless - your brain reacts as it is supposed to with a toxic substance
  • our brokenness makes us stronger, and our weaknesses and strengths are two sides of the same coin
  • self-compassion is more effective than self-criticism
  • effective habit change is rarely linear
  • mindfulness and self-awareness are critical steps to any lasting habit change
  • allowing and feeling our emotions rather than numbing them is the way through
  • pain is inevitable but suffering is optional
  • we are wired for connection, and we help each other the most when we share not only the good but also the bad and the ugly
